Why You Should Consider a Concrete Overlay for Your House

By Greg Handchild

When it comes to concrete, most of us imagine a gray, dull and boring floor. Warehouse stores are known for their use of concrete flooring, although they typically use it as a cost cutting measure because concrete is cheaper than linoleum and other flooring types.

With that said, concrete doesn't have to be dull and boring; a concrete overlay is a cost effective way to get a beautiful floor. This option is ideal for any establishment, including a home. The cost of an engineered layer of concrete is similar to tile and the results will amaze you.

Many homes that belong to millionaires have marble flooring in at least part of their homes. This is a beautiful option but incredibly expensive; adding an air of opulence to the home. There are companies that make concrete and polymer resin mixtures that mimic marble at a price point that the average consumer can handle.

The polymer is used to help bind the overlay to the existing concrete; this allows the properties of concrete to change so that it does not crack with a humidity or temperature changes in a home. Most importantly, the process allows the concrete to get the look, color, and shimmer of marble.

Various thicknesses are possible with these overlays; they can be several inches thick or as thin as a credit card. The end result is very durable, as the polymer and concrete mixture sticks well to the existing slab.

The reality is, even the floor at the warehouse store has a concrete overlay on top of the slab. That is what gives the concrete the shine that it has. Those floors stand up to years of abuse without any signs of wear. The overlay is also resistant to most chemicals, salt and UV exposure, making it perfect for even outdoor applications.

A rising trend in modern homes is concrete and concrete overlay countertops. This option is a popular choice among homeowners because concrete is well-known for its strength and durability; the overlay is well-known for its ability to mimic other materials.

As for finial appearance, some homeowners keep the concrete look by staining and others use an overlay to get a marble or granite look. As you know, marble and granite make beautiful countertops, but neither have the strength and durability to standup to concrete. Most importantly, concrete is more resistant to odors and stains; making it the perfect choice for either your home's floors or countertops. - 29955
