Modular Sofas - Things You Need To Know Before Buying

By Jamie White

Are modular sofas for you? Should you consider one even if you are able to fit a normal contemporary or a traditional sofa in your home?

Modular sofas are extremely versatile and a great way to make use of awkward spaces. They come in different numbers of modules for smaller or larger rooms, and in different configurations to fit different shaped rooms.

Modular sofas can look particularly impressive in LARGE spaces, as they tend to require more length and width of floor space than traditional types of sofa and therefore need sufficient area to look their best. They can be used to define spaces within a large area such as an open plan loft apartment or warehouse conversion. For this reason they may not be right for a small apartment.

Equally though, if you should have a small town apartment or home which cannot easily accommodate a normal large sofa, you can use a modular one to good effect. In fact it may be your only option depending on the shape of your rooms.

If you are looking to get the maximum seating space you should also consider modular sofas. They are extremely functional and, often better value than the traditional type.

Modular sofas come in a range of sizes from small to large, and in differing numbers of units that make up them. This makes it easier to choose the right type for your needs. Small sofas are interesting as they can be a comfy chair for one person or ideal for a couple to cuddle in. Bear in mind the arms of a sofa can make a good deal of difference in respect of how many people can comfortably sit on it.

Another consideration is the amount of back support afforded by a sofa. Often the low-backed type look extremely chic and Italian, and will suit a room with a low ceiling, but, a low back is not very supportive and will not suit some. It is essential to try before you buy.

Another point to keep in mind is that the over all appearance of furniture can depend on the size and shape of the arms. Narrow arms can make an entire sofa look smaller and more elegant, whilst large or bulky ones will do the opposite. Thus a large sofa with narrow arms might not look too big in a smallish room, but might not look as good as a sofa with big arms in a large room. In the latter case the sofa could make more of an impact with bigger arms. Some of these modular sofas these days have no arms at all and, whilst these can look minimalist and fashionable they are not always practical as a person seated at the end has nowhere to rest their arm.

If you don't have a long enough wall or space for an adequately large sofa consider instead a modular corner sofa. These usually sit along two walls with a section that allows it to turn the corner rather than be broken into two separate sections. This can give a nice integrated and grand appearance in a large enough room, whilst giving a lot of seating space. If your room is smaller, a similar effect can be achieved by using smaller units and/or less of the individual units.

An alternative option to consider if you are short of space or need an extra bed is a sofa bed. These pieces of furniture are remarkably versatile, looking as they do like a sofa for most of the time, but easily converting to a bed when required You get a dual purpose by this means.

When thinking about the furniture for your sitting room you may want to consider whether the arrangement will remain static, or whether you might need to change things around sometimes. If the latter then a sofa and some chairs may be more practical than a large sofa, or you may want a modular sofa that can be reconfigured in different ways to give a different look to the room.

If you keep all these factors in mind you should be able to find the perfect modular sofa for your home. - 29955
