Updating Your Kitchen Cabinets Without Replacing Them

By Joe McLain

Regardless of what you might think as you roam around your kitchen, the cabinet doors are actually an important accessory. But as with most things in life, the styles don't last forever; neither does stain or paint. So when you finally realize that you're out of style and need an update, you probably wont have the money to purchase new cabinets. But there are definitely a few ways to update your kitchen cabinet doors without spending a lot of money.

The easiest way to create a whole new updated look for your cabinets is to simply get new door handles or knobs. Often the handles or knobs quickly make the doors look old and outdated. If you replace them once in a while you'll be able to update your kitchen a bit for just a few dollars. Plus its always great to get new hardware on the doors. Just make sure you replace old knobs with new knobs or old handles with new handles.

As you're looking for hardware for your cabinets, you might want to hit up the local flea market and bargain stores before you check out the big retailers. The hardware you find might be someones old hardware, but you should be able to clean them up to look as good as new. And most likely there's nothing wrong with them. The previous owner just might not have liked them anymore. One mans just is another mans treasure, right?

You also might want to think about repainting or re-staining your current cabinet doors. All you have to do is sand off the old paint or stain and get some new stuff on there. And be sure to remember that you also need to re-do the visible parts of the cabinets themselves so that they match the doors. Of course this method of updating your kitchen cabinets requires more time and work, but the results will be well worth it!

If you don't really feel like spending the time and effort to re-stain or repaint, you could replace just the doors of the cabinets. You should be able to find new doors that match your existing paint or stain to replace the old ones with, which will give you a completely new, updated look. Since the overall look of your cabinets is mostly based on the doors themselves, by replacing just the kitchen doors you'll be able to clean up and update your kitchen without spending a lot of money.

If you haven't already, you'll soon find out that updating your kitchen can get pretty expensive. That's why you shouldn't waste the extra cash by buying brand new cabinets when you can simply update them with very little money and work. Another option might even be to hire a contractor to build just new cabinet doors for about half the price it would cost for all new cabinets. Why just the doors? Because most likely there's absolutely nothing wrong with the cabinets themselves. Don't replace what isn't broken! Use a little imagination and create a whole new look for your kitchen for less cash than the cost of new cabinets. - 29955
