Here's How You Can Be Improving Concentration

By Austin Baker

There is a way for improving concentration that you may be unfamiliar with. Adults often perform simple calculations using alternative techniques. Because of this, our ability to perform mathematical calculations becomes impaired. Many of us struggle with simple math because we are so out of practice.

We rely on calculators to prepare our monthly budgets, reconcile our checking accounts, and do routine calculations. When we put together spreadsheets, there is no need for us to make sure our figures are correct, as most of these programs perform automatic calculations.

Performing mathematical calculations mentally will greatly improve your math skills, and it will go a long way in enhancing your ability to maintain focus and concentration. You may find this task challenging initially, but if you continue to apply yourself, you will find your mathematical skills increasing significantly in a short period of time. This facilitates the division of a restaurant check, as you will have the skill to mentally calculate in seconds how much your portion is, and how much you should leave as a gratuity.

You may need additional time for manual and mental calculations when you first start doing it that way again. If this is something you do frequently throughout the day, you may find the process somewhat aggravating. Over time, however, you will have an unexpected feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment as you progress in improving concentration.

However, make a rule that you only use it after you have made a very good attempt to get the answer on your own. You can use the calculator as a way to verify that your answers are correct. The more your challenge yourself to do your math by hand or in your mind the more your mind is going to benefit. When we stop using a part of our brain functions we will lose them. - 29955
